Eventually, I wrote a rhyming version, and I’m delighted that Scotland
Street has agreed to publish it. Beavers are a keystone species that play a central role in
reversing the biodiversity crisis and build vital flood defences that we increasingly need as
the climate crisis unfolds. They were wiped out in Scotland 400 years ago because their pelts
were highly desirable. I was lucky to have a ringside seat watching their reintroduction, and
seeing the astonishing positive impact they’ve had, transforming the dead agricultural ditches I played in as a child into species-rich wetlands.
